A disruption of 80 million tonnes per annum in Gulf LNG exports has led to a 4% decline in Asia’s LNG imports, reaching 21.1 million tonnes in March 2026, the lowest since 2019. This supply shock, driven by a 20 bcm drop in global gas output, has severely impacted trade and demand across the region.
The Gas Exporting Countries’ Forum reported a 1.7% contraction in global LNG trade, marking the first decline since January 2025. This scenario highlights Asia's heavy reliance on Gulf supplies routed through the Strait of Hormuz.
