The government is exploring a merger between state-run lenders Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and REC Ltd as part of a restructuring initiative. This follows Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's proposal in the Union Budget 2026-27 to strengthen public sector financial institutions. Shares of both entities surged up to 6% during a special trading session following the announcement.

The final decision on the merger will be made at the highest level, with the Power Ministry tasked to work out the modalities. This move could significantly impact funding for power generation and distribution projects.
