Foreign portfolio investors withdrew ₹34,843 crore from Indian equities in October, extending heavy selling into a second consecutive month. The outflows followed ₹35,861 crore of withdrawals in September and took cumulative FPI selling in Indian equities in 2026 to ₹2.95 lakh crore.
The flow picture improved during the final week of October. FPIs invested around ₹6,300 crore between 26 Oct and 30 Oct, reversing the nearly ₹2,700 crore outflow recorded in the week ended 23 Oct. The late-month buying marked a change in near-term sentiment, although the available data does not yet establish a sustained reversal.
₹2.95 lakh crore outflow remains the larger market signal. Foreign selling has been linked to elevated crude oil prices, global interest-rate concerns and uncertainty around the corporate earnings outlook. These factors affect India’s valuation premium, the rupee and the liquidity available to large-cap equities across sectors. Financial services and other index-heavy segments remain sensitive to changes in overseas allocation because FPI flows can influence both cash-market demand and broader risk appetite. 💼
₹6,300 crore late-month buying provides a counter-signal. If buying continues across several weeks, it would indicate that foreign investors are becoming more comfortable with Indian earnings and macroeconomic conditions. If flows reverse again, the October and September withdrawals would remain the dominant trend for market participants.
OI Charts data showed the Nifty closing at ₹23,053 on 30 Oct 2026, up 0.51% for the session. The index gained 1.1% over five sessions and 1.2% over 20 sessions, while trading within a 52-week range of ₹22,180 to ₹23,489. The latest rise therefore came alongside a modest recovery in index performance despite the scale of foreign selling. 📈
Traders will watch weekly FPI flow data, crude oil prices, global interest-rate expectations and upcoming corporate earnings for confirmation of whether the late-October buying persists. Domestic institutional flows and the Nifty’s response near its 52-week range will also show whether local liquidity is offsetting continued overseas withdrawals. 🌐
