Inflation jumps to 5.54% as food costs surge
Retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August, led by food inflation at 7.74%. The RBI’s recent 25-basis-point repo-rate hike and a 0.70% Nifty decline kept banking and consumption sectors under focus.

India’s retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August, according to government data released on 12 Oct 2026. The increase was driven by food prices, with food-basket inflation climbing to 7.74% from 5.97% in the previous month. September’s reading was the highest in the new Consumer Price Index series introduced in January. 🧺
The data reinforces pressure on household consumption and interest-rate-sensitive sectors. The Reserve Bank had already raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% last week amid inflation concerns. Higher food inflation can reduce discretionary spending, while elevated borrowing costs can weigh on credit demand, housing activity and corporate financing. Banking 💼 and consumer-facing sectors therefore remain sensitive to the market’s assessment of how persistent the price pressure will be.
Market pricing reflected a cautious tone on the day. OI Charts data showed the Nifty closing at ₹22,363, down 0.70% on 12 Oct 2026, after falling 0.8% over five sessions. In OI Charts data for a leading private-sector bank, the stock closed at ₹1,340, down 1.11%, while futures open interest rose 0.1%, indicating a short build-up. Its options put-call ratio stood at 0.61, with max pain at ₹1,340, the largest call open interest at ₹1,340 and the largest put open interest at ₹1,300. These levels point to ₹1,340 as the immediate positioning pivot and ₹1,300 as a notable downside reference for the 27 Oct 2026 expiry.
The next market focus is whether food inflation moderates in the following CPI release and whether the RBI maintains its restrictive stance. Traders will also track consumption indicators, credit growth and commentary from financial companies for evidence of whether higher rates are affecting demand. The inflation reading’s impact will depend on the persistence of food-price pressure and its transmission into broader consumer prices.
