India’s Road Transport Ministry notified amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules on 26 Oct 2026, allowing vehicles certified to run on petrol-ethanol blends from E20 to E100, including E85 and E100 coverage. The notification also raised the applicable weight threshold for light petrol and diesel vehicles to 3,500 kg, from 3,000 kg. 🚗
The change creates a formal framework for flex-fuel vehicles engineered to operate on different petrol-ethanol mixtures approved by their manufacturers. Fortune India reported that the revised emission-certification provisions explicitly include E100 alongside E85, while the government is promoting domestically produced ethanol to reduce dependence on imported crude oil. ⚡
The approval does not make existing petrol vehicles compatible with higher ethanol blends, require owners to modify their vehicles or permit standard vehicles to use E85 or E100. Vehicles must be specifically designed, certified and tested for the relevant fuel range. This keeps engine compatibility, emission compliance and certification timelines central to any commercial rollout.
The policy is relevant to automakers, fuel suppliers and the broader alternative-fuels ecosystem. It may support development of compatible models and ethanol distribution, but adoption depends on vehicle availability, fuel access and implementation of testing requirements. The rules therefore provide regulatory clarity rather than an immediate change in the existing vehicle fleet. ⚙️
OI Charts data showed Maruti Suzuki at ₹11,220 on 26 Oct, down 0.09% for the session, with volume of 489,223 shares. The stock was down 8% over 20 sessions and remained near its 52-week low of ₹11,102, against a high of ₹17,370. Futures open interest rose 3.8% to 3,241,400 shares in a short build-up, while the put-call ratio stood at 0.45. The ₹11,200 put had the largest put open interest, the ₹12,000 call had the largest call open interest and max pain was ₹11,400 for the 27 Oct expiry.
Traders will watch for certified E100-compatible model announcements, wider fuel availability, company disclosures and detailed government implementation guidance. The policy also supports the ethanol value chain, but its effect on vehicle sales depends on certification and consumer access to compatible fuel.
