Crude oil prices plunged more than 8% on 4 Nov 2026 after the US midterm election outcome raised expectations of easing US-Israeli tensions with Iran and improving supply prospects. Brent crude settled 8.7% lower at $94.62 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate fell 8.3% to $88.12. Both benchmarks closed at their lowest levels since 31 Aug. Oil-linked shares opened higher on 5 Nov, while upstream producers faced pressure.
OI Charts data showed BPCL closing at ₹317.10, up 4.1%, on volume of 1.70 crore shares. Its futures open interest fell 6.3%, indicating short covering rather than fresh long build-up. The stock gained 9.7% over five sessions and 6.8% over 20 sessions. IOC closed at ₹144.50, up 1.7%, on volume of 2.58 crore shares; futures open interest declined 3.0%, also pointing to short covering. IOC rose 10.8% over five sessions and 10.7% over 20 sessions.
The move creates a split across Energy ⚡. Lower crude can reduce input or procurement costs for oil marketing companies, airlines and paint makers, although inventory valuations, product prices and retail fuel decisions affect the earnings benefit. BPCL's November 23 expiry has maximum pain at ₹305, with the largest call open interest at ₹320 and put open interest at ₹300. IOC's maximum pain is ₹140, with call open interest concentrated at ₹150 and put open interest at ₹125. These levels identify the immediate derivatives zones around the downstream rally.
ONGC moved in the opposite direction, closing at ₹230.00, down 2.1%, on volume of 1.72 crore shares. Its futures open interest rose 1.3% alongside the price decline, indicating a short build-up. The stock was up 1.9% over five sessions but only 2.3% over 20 sessions. Its November 23 expiry has maximum pain at ₹230, with the largest call open interest at ₹240 and put open interest at ₹220. The next focus is whether crude remains weak, whether regional tensions ease further and whether downstream gains hold after the initial reaction. Airlines ✈️ and paint makers also remain sensitive to the cost trend.
