Indian Bank plans to raise another USD 500 million through External Commercial Borrowings by December-end, taking its total ECB mobilisation to USD 1 billion, managing director and chief executive Binod Kumar told ETBFSI on 20 Oct 2026. The lender plans to raise a USD 150 million tranche shortly and complete the remaining borrowing by December-end. The latest disclosure clarifies the earlier report that the bank had raised between USD 400 million and USD 500 million so far.
The bank is pursuing the overseas funding despite an unfavourable market environment because it is securing what management described as a good rate. The borrowings are being sourced mainly through GIFT City and the bank’s international branch in Singapore, with the plan supported by the Reserve Bank of India’s concessional swap window. The final cost, maturity profile and currency mix were not disclosed. 🏦
The board has also approved infrastructure bonds of up to ₹5,000 cr to finance or refinance infrastructure and affordable housing projects. Together, the ECB and bond programmes give the public-sector lender foreign-currency and domestic funding channels for long-term credit. The bank had previously mobilised FCNR(B) deposits worth ₹22,486 cr, or about USD 2.4 billion, making the latest plan an extension of its overseas funding activity rather than a first entry into the market.
OI Charts data for 19 Oct 2026 showed the stock at ₹856.85, up 0.32% on the day, with volume of 1,105,179 shares. The stock had gained 5.2% over five sessions and 2.0% over 20 sessions, while futures showed a 2.7% increase in open interest with a long build-up. The futures premium was 0.29%, and the put-call ratio was 0.64. 📈
For the banking sector, the development highlights continued use of overseas borrowing and bond markets to fund infrastructure-linked lending. The next markers are the USD 150 million tranche, completion of the remaining ECB amount by December-end, the borrowing terms and the timing of any ₹5,000 cr bond issuance. The ₹860 strike had the largest call and put open interest for the 27 Oct 2026 expiry, while max pain stood at ₹840, providing the key derivatives levels to watch. 🏗️
