India’s industrial activity is expected to receive support from festive demand and sustained public capital expenditure in the second half of FY27, although the outlook remains exposed to unfavourable base effects, weak monsoon conditions and higher input costs. A report by Union Bank of India said improving rural demand could provide an upside surprise despite weather-related volatility.
Industrial production growth moderated to 6.7% in September from 7.8% in August. Even after the sequential slowdown, growth for the first half of FY27 stood at 6.8%, ahead of 4.4% in the corresponding period a year earlier. The report said the key test for the economy is whether stronger rural consumption and continued investment translate into sustained industrial activity.
Industrial production 6.7% in September remains supportive for manufacturing, but the moderation highlights the importance of the upcoming demand cycle. Manufacturing and consumer durables face less favourable comparisons with the previous year, which could make year-on-year growth harder to sustain. Higher input costs could also pressure margins across industrial and consumer-facing businesses.
For infrastructure and capital-goods companies, ongoing public capex remains a demand channel, while consumer-facing manufacturers will depend more heavily on festive sales and rural purchasing power. The combination of investment and consumption therefore creates a two-part support for the industrial sector, but neither driver has yet removed the risks from weather conditions and cost inflation. 🏭
OI Charts data showed NIFTY at ₹22,699 on 28 Oct 2026, down 0.2% on the day and 1.6% over 20 sessions. BANKNIFTY closed at ₹54,267, up 0.5% on the day but down 2.1% over 20 sessions. The broader market backdrop therefore remained mixed as investors assessed growth support against near-term uncertainty.
Investors will watch the next industrial production releases, festive-season consumption data, rural demand indicators, input-cost trends and the pace of government capital expenditure. These measures will indicate whether the H2 FY27 support described in the report is translating into broader and more durable industrial growth. The report’s assessment also keeps manufacturing, infrastructure and consumer durables in focus as the comparison base becomes more demanding. ⚙️
