WTI and Brent futures moved higher on 27 Oct 2026 after reports of an explosion at Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura complex, which has a refinery capacity of 550,000 barrels per day and also functions as a major export terminal. The contracts traded near the upper ends of their intraday ranges, but the report did not establish whether crude production, refinery operations or export loadings were disrupted. ⚡
The market distinction is important. A refinery outage can reduce Saudi crude runs, which is marginally bearish for crude demand but can support refined-product cracks. A confirmed interruption to export loadings would instead remove seaborne supply and create a more durable crude premium. Past Gulf infrastructure headlines have often triggered sharp initial rallies that faded after damage assessments showed operations remained intact. The immediate energy-sector impact therefore depends on inspection reports, shipping activity and any official confirmation of a physical outage.
- Short build-up in Reliance futures: OI Charts data showed the stock at ₹1,196, down 0.5% on the day, while futures open interest rose 15.5%. The futures premium was 0.97%, with the ₹1,200 strike carrying both the largest call and put open interest and matching max pain. The stock was down 4.2% over 20 sessions, making ₹1,200 the near-term positioning level to monitor.
- Long build-up in ONGC futures: OI Charts data showed the stock at ₹229.85, up 0.6%, while futures open interest increased 9.3%. The ₹230 strike was the largest call-open-interest level and max pain, while the largest put open interest was at ₹220. ONGC had gained 2.3% over five sessions but remained down 3.0% over 20 sessions.
For upstream exposure, sustained crude strength can improve sentiment around realised prices, while refiners and integrated energy companies remain sensitive to the balance between crude costs, product cracks and feedstock availability. The next price catalysts are official damage assessments, confirmation of export-terminal operations, tanker loading data and the follow-through in WTI and Brent futures. OI Charts data also placed both companies’ November futures expiry on 23 Nov 2026, 27 days away.
